5 SECRETS TO IDENTIFY A GREAT RECRUITMENT AGENCY

A lot of recruitment companies receive a bad reputation as far as candidate care is concerned, but are all recruitment companies the same? Many only care about the transaction and in filling roles and so if you are to get involved with a recruitment agency it’s important to keep your eyes peeled and to know what to look for in order to identify one of the good ones.
Good recruitment companies should be:
1. Realistic, honest and upfront
This is something that candidates can sometimes roll their eyes at when referring to a recruitment agency, however, if you’re looking for a reputable agency, you should expect only the best. It can be hard to tell if an agency is going to be upfront and honest, but there are a few tell-tale signs:
  • They will respond to your emails, and with straight to the point answers – if an agency ignores your emails, or skirts around the question, it’s more than likely that they’re not being honest with you.
  • They manage your expectations – it’s nice for an agency to be enthusiastic, but if you’re interviewing for a job role, you want to be given a realistic view of the company and the position, before you agree to meet with them. A realistic agency will tell all, this includes the good and the not so good. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • They will prepare you for your interview – no stand up agency should ever send you in to an interview unprepared, if they don’t take the time to prep you, you shouldn’t waste your time with them.
2. Provide a dedicated recruiter who will handle the whole process
When looking for a new job you only want to tell somebody once your wants, needs and expectations. You don’t want to have to continuously tell the tale, to various different people. Any respectful agency should provide you with a specialist advisor; most agencies are large and recruit in various areas, your advisor should be attuned to your requirements. Having one person manage the whole process ensures you receive the very best treatment, without being passed from pillar to post.
3. Negotiate your salary based on your abilities not just experience
Agencies are experienced in negotiating fees and wage packages, so should never leave this down to the candidate to discuss. When choosing an agency, make sure they are going to negotiate your wages based on your abilities and not just your experience. It’s often the case that you have some experience in the role you’re applying for, but all the ability to carry it out to its full potential. Don’t let your agency sell you on for less than your worth.
4. Supportive with your contractual obligations
Work contracts can often be a lot of legal lingo that is difficult to understand and a little overwhelming. A professional agency will make sure you completely understand, and are happy with the contract you are given. If there are any discrepancies you’re not satisfied with they will negotiate with the employer on your behalf. Recruitment agencies are experienced in dealing with legal employment contracts; if your agency isn’t willing to interpret yours, then it's not the one for you.
5. Compliance to EU regulations
Legitimate agencies should always go by the book, and in the UK that means complying with EU regulations. If your agency doesn’t comply with EU regulations, then it’s more than likely that the companies they work with don’t.
